This enemy is an arch enemy, burning whispers from the fiery sky.
Illuminating the earth, leaving a painful kiss and scorching touch on skin.
Skin left vulnerable with imprints of unseen damage.
Oops, it’s beginning to sound like a dirge.
Anyways, you know this enemy, you just didn't take it as a big deal.
I’m happy to announce to you that this enemy in the sky is”Sun rays.”
Not As Bad As It Seems…
As the name implies sun rays are the rays of light emitted by the sun.
Truth be told, sun rays are not totally bad, as they serve lots of importance to earth.
They not only provide natural lighting during the day, it also serves as a renewable source of energy used in solar energy production.
Come to think of it, thanks to the sun rays, plants are able to thrive efficiently through photosynthesis; a process where plants convert sunlight into chemical energy.
How about its positive impact in human life, how it stimulates the production of serotonin and enhances mood, how it naturally disinfects materials exposed to it and how it helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, promoting better sleep quality.
The Chocolate Goodies …
Even though rays of light are almost like a poison to the skin, it also has a few chocolate goodies that soothes your skin.
Exposing your skin to morning sunlight enables production of vitamin D which helps in immune function and bone health.
Due to its anti-inflammatory effects it also helps improve skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
So how then is it a poison to the skin?
Poison In Disguise…
Despite all these goodies the sun rays give to mankind, it’s still poisonous to the skin.
Actually, the sun emits three types of ultraviolet rays (UVA, UVB and UVC) that are are invisible to the human eye.
Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays can have very harmful effects like skin dehydration, actinic keratosis, sunburn, premature aging and increased risk for skin cancer.
This is because they damage the DNA in skin cells and cause mutations that contribute to skin issues.
However, the good news is, you can easily prevent this enemy from tampering with your skin by employing certain strategies.
The Simple Tactics…
They Include:
Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days and reapply every 2 hours.
It should be with you everywhere you go like MTN.
Limit exposure to direct sunlight; stay in Shady areas during sunny hours, especially between 11a.m - 4 p.m.
Wear protective clothing during the sunny season.
