One of the things you should avoid in life is being labeled as “bad.” This word spreads like wildfire.
In this case, there was an innocent “red guy” that people doubted its relevance and named it an enemy of good health.
Wondering who the red guy is? It’s “red meat.”
You must have eaten red meat at least once or several times. If not, then you must be a vegetarian, I guess?
There are many misconceptions about red meat. I regard it as a “misconception” because this information is not true, it's just creating undue panic.
Even though this red guy is not totally innocent, it’s not as bad as people think it is.
The Good Vs The Bad Guy
There are two types of meat; Red meat and white meat.
People believe white meat is the “good guy” and better choice. Alright, no dispute.
They are classified based on the level of myoglobin they contain. The myoglobin is the iron containing protein in the muscle which gives red meat its color.
Red meat is usually obtained from livestock like cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses and many others.
White meat includes poultry and fish, and are gotten from animals like rabbit, chicken and turkey.
We also have processed meat but that is a name given to any meat that has been preserved by smoking, curing, salting or using other preservatives. They include bacon, ham, sausage and hot dogs. (These are the real notorious guys)!
They are high in sodium, fat, nitrates and other additives that can increase risk of health complications.
Now the question is, should red meat be totally avoided in your diet?

These are the unbelievable benefits of red meat you probably haven’t heard of:
Red meat contains essential nutrients like protein, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, zinc, selenium, and omega 3 fatty acids.
The human body needs all these nutrients for production of new red blood cells.
Red meats especially beef contain amino acids like L-carnitine which helps in fat metabolism.
It also contains antioxidants which helps strengthen the immune system and increase longevity.
They contain protein which is naturally satisfying, therefore helps ward off unnecessary food cravings. It also helps in building and maintaining lean muscle mass and bones.
The iron in red meat helps prevent iron deficiency anemia.
The vitamin B12 helps in preventing mental issues like fatigue, depression and brain fog.
The zinc it contains helps the immune system to function effectively.
They also contain creatine which helps boost exercise performance and improves endurance.
Now tell me, isn't this amazing?
In conclusion
Despite all these amazing benefits, red meat has its potential side effects.
Red meat is high in saturated fat and sodium so when eaten in excess it raises cholesterol level and increases a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, kidney problems, digestive issues and even death.
Therefore, the key is eating red meat in moderation.
However, white meat and most preferably fish is a better choice, because they have fewer side effects, so feel free to choose the one that soothes you the most.
